Onion harvest

We do have more than one onion. In fact they've been our most successful crop this year, to the extent that we're running out of space to dry and store them. We haven't had two dry days/nights together for a very long time, so leaving them on the soil to dry off, as the books optimistically advise, isn't an option.

After removing (with no loss of life) the snail nursery:

parts of our old fridge/freezer come in handy, as drying racks in the shed:

But the shed's full, and now we have overspill into the garage at home, where because it's so rainy the washing drying on the Victorian pulley is deliciously permeated by the smell of onion. We don't own a tumble drier, so when it's wet this is the alternative. Teenage noses are beginning to wrinkle.

Another item on the list for the forthcoming shed interior makeover: drying lines on the walls.

Your onions look good, ours are on the smaller side but we are happy with them. Like you we have problems drying them, I left them out on the plot on wire racks but there has not been a day without rain so far,I think they will have to come home to wherever there is space to finish drying out!

Boy, those are good looking onions. Those snails are messy little guys and gals, aren't they? You've had so much rain and we've had so little.

Hi Linda! How are you? I haven't been by for awhile. I keep getting behind. I love your onion photos! I have 2 suggestions: 1. Put the snails on or in a bird bath so the birds will find them to eat. 2. Chop some of your onions, lay them on a tray, put them in the freezer, and when they are frozen, put them in freezer bags. I have onions lying all over the place waiting for me to chop. I will store some, though.

Quite the bonanza of onions you've got this year. Congrats. This year I've had a modest harvest, but last year was ridiculously successful. I had to leave the car out in the weather for weeks while onions dried in the garage. LOL

How nice for you this winter to have lots of onions on hand for savory cooking! Enjoy. :-D

Great onions! We love them here. AND you have your own escargot crop too!

Your images make me want to go down and fry one with some eggs for my Sunday breakfast. I am glad you had a good harvest.

(Slippery garden life has been abundant here, too. Snails and slugs abound. So much rain. They seem to emerge from the drops.)

Linda thanks for stopping by my blog, we had some nice onions in our garden this year but not as many or as large as yours. This was our year for green peppers. Last evening a deer was in our garden while we were away. Have a great day

Excellent photos. I liked the onions, fox, raspberry and more. I am signing up as a follower and look forward to more great images. I see you post a lot of nature shots and so do I. I frequently post cactus and plants. Thanks for your comments on my site about my photography tour. I will be showing more photography tour photos from the Vermillion Cliffs and the gorgeous Slot Canyons over the next few weeks. I am very lucky to have the opportunity to go to the class.
